A blood sugar test measures how good the processing of glucose or better known as sugar is done by your body. There are quite a few types of blood sugar tests that are conducted. Some tests are to identify pre-diabetes or diabetes while there is a blood sugar test that helps determine if the management of diabetes is going as planned or not.

One of the blood sugar tests used to measure the level of sugar in the blood after fasting at least eight hours or overnight is called fasting blood sugar test. For a normal fasting blood sugar test, the result is lower than 100mg of glucose per deciliter of blood (mg/dL).

If your fasting blood sugar level is between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL you are likely to be considered a pre-diabetic. This is also called impaired fasting glucose. For verification of the diagnosis, your doctor would have to repeat the blood sugar test after several days to at least a week. If your fasting blood sugar level reaches 125 mg/dL, it may already be classified as Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It may also be accompanied by symptoms like extreme thirst or hunger, frequent urination and blurry vision. One more type of blood sugar test is the random blood sugar test. This method allows you to measure your

blood glucose level any time.It does not matter if you take the test before or after the meal or after fasting. Still, the normal result for a random blood sugar test should be lower than 100 mg/dL. For a random blood sugar tests, pre-diabetes is between 100 mg/dL and 199 mg/dL. Higher than 199 mg/dL is already considered either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. However, your doctor may still need to perform further tests to verify the type of diabetes.

The third type of blood sugar test is the oral glucose tolerance test. This test measures the response of your body to sugar. Your fasting blood sugar level is measured first and then you will drink a sugary solution. Afterwards, your glucose level is measured after an hour then another after two hours. If your glucose level is higher than the normal then you are already diabetic. It is important for you to eat normally and to be in shape for the test to be accurate because a simple cold can affect the result. Blood sugar level between 140 mg/dL and 199 mg/dL is pre-diabetic and above 199 mg/dL indicates diabetes. And lastly there is one more blood sugar test and this is called the A1C test which  is also known as a glycated hemoglobin test. This test is not conducted for the diagnosis of diabetes but a measurement of how well diabetes is being managed.
